Lupus, an autoimmune disease, happens when the immune system attacks its tissues, causing inflammation, swelling, pain, and damage. Lupus rash on legs appear due to a chronic, auto-immune disease called lupus. People with lupus produce abnormal antibodies in their blood that target tissues within their own body rather than foreign infectious agents. Persons with systemic form of lupus can help prevent “flares” of disease by avoiding sun exposure and by not abruptly discontinuing medications.
The role of the physical therapist is to assess each patient and to determine an effective plan of care to help reduce pain, stiffness, and inflammation, as well as to improve joint range of motion and functional mobility. Lupus is not genetically transmitted. Lupus generates a wide range of symptoms and people with the disease experience them at different intensities.
