Symptoms of acid reflux may be a sign that stomach acid has inflamed your esophagus. This acid reflux disease, also known as gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), can produce a variety of symptoms. The most common symptoms are: heartburn, regurgitation, dyspepsia, or and difficulty swallowing. Various lifestyle and dietary factors can contribute to heartburn by relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter and allowing it to open, allowing the stomach acid to damage the lining of esophagus and causing bleeding. Making a few lifestyle changes and using over-the-counter antacids usually you will be able to control acid reflux symptoms. Acid reflux symptoms most often occur: after eating a heavy meal, when bending over or lifting an object, when lying down (especially on your back), or if you are pregnant. Certain foods such as: citrus fruits, chocolate, garlic and onions, spicy or fatty foods, and alcohol or caffeinated drinks can make the symptoms of acid reflux worse. Left untreated, this condition can cause ulceration leading to bleeding and an iron deficiency that could develop into anemia due to a chronic blood loss.
